Vishu is an auspicious holiday celebrated by Malayalees across the state of Kerala and other adjoining regions in India. It is usually observed between the month of April. Vishu marks the beginning of Malayalam New Year, the beginning of hope and new life. Vishu is  usually coming in the second week of April in the Gregorian calendar. It marks the new year in accordance with Kolla Varsham the Malayalam calendar. It is also celebrated in the Tulunadu Region ie. Mangalore &  Udupi districts.

People gather together for merry making and Patassu (fire crackers) are burst. Singing and dancing are a part of the gala enjoyment. Vishu which is usually celebrated during the months of March and April takes care of the different Vishu traditions. All the traditional rituals are followed during this festival as they are believed to usher in a new basket of prosperity and good wishes.

The Malayalees prepare themselves beforehand for the Vishu celebrations and one of the most important of them is to view the Vishukani right in the morning after getting up from sleep. There is a spirit associated with this festival which raises the hope and expectations along with the New Year. This one is a homely affair and is rich in all traditions and customs.
